Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) Tutoring

One-on-one tutoring support for eligible children and dependants of Gold Card Veterans.

Are you or your spouse a Gold-Card Veteran with children in primary or high school?

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) offers financial assistance, special support, and student services to eligible children of current or former ADF members.

Through DVA tutoring, your child can receive personalised, one-on-one lessons tailored to their needs.

Our goal is to make the process simple and stress-free, so families can focus on learning and achieving academic success.

Who is Eligible?

Additional Tuition is a scheme provided by the Federal Government and administered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) whereby eligible children are entitled to government funded private tutoring.

Currently, the DVA can approve $3,500 for additional tuition and further funding can be provided when required.

Your child may qualify for DVA-funded tutoring if:

  • You or your child’s other parent/guardian is a current or former member of the Australian Defence Force.
  • You receive support under DVA due to a service-related injury, illness, or condition.
  • You’ve received a VCES (Veterans’ Children Education Scheme) or MRCAETS (Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme) approval for your child.

Children under these schemes are generally:

  • Aged under 16, or
  • Aged 16 to 25 and enrolled in full-time education or training.

Many families qualify but don’t realise they can access additional tuition support alongside other educational benefits.

When it comes to tutoring funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), families want a provider they can trust, someone that understands the unique needs of defence-connected children and simplifies the process from start to finish.

That’s where ThriveTutors comes in.

Experience with DVA-funded families

We’ve worked closely with DVA families across Australia, helping children from various backgrounds thrive academically and emotionally. Our team knows the ins and outs of the VCES and MRCAETS schemes, including how to handle DVA approvals, invoicing, and reporting requirements—so you don’t have to.

Personalised Online Support

Every child learns differently. ThriveTutors offers:

We understand the challenges some defence families face, disruption, adjustment, and change and our approach reflects that care and sensitivity.

A Whole-Child Approach

We believe tutoring should do more than improve grades. It should help build confidence, self-belief, and independence. Many DVA children benefit from extra encouragement and structure, and our tutors are selected not just for subject knowledge, but for their ability to connect and inspire.

If you’ve received your DVA approval letter, you’re ready to go and you can simply send us an enquiry.

If not, all you need to do is complete the DVA Form D9212 which can be downloaded here and then all you need to do is post the completed form to DVA in your capital city. Alternatively, forms can be lodged online through MyService or you can email educationschemes@dva.gov.au.
