Why One-On-One Tutoring is Valuable for Students

Every weekday across Australia, over 4 million children attend school. Between the hours of 9:00am and 3:30pm, each one of them is engaged in education, everything from english, maths and science, to art, physical education, technologies and more.

The classroom environment, however, isn’t always conducive to productivity, so this is where one on one tutoring can help.

When a student and a teacher engage directly, the benefits are undeniable. Support is immediate as well as ongoing, and lessons are tailored to suit each child’s schedule and needs.

Keep on reading for our top 4 reasons why one on one tutoring could be invaluable for your child…

1. Safe Learning Space

Every child develops at different stages, so it’s no surprise that school–based learning doesn’t always work well for everyone.

The Australian curriculum standards are set by state and territory authorities. This means that all students from Prep to Year 12 will have the same requirements, but not all students will be at the same level when it comes to comprehension. This can make digesting day–to–day information difficult, further compounded by the fact that their fellow pupils aren’t always on their best behaviour in the classroom.

One on one tutoring can be done digitally and from the comfort of home, meaning no interruptions or distractions from classmates. As a student’s focus improves, so too does their confidence, and they’ll become much more comfortable asking questions and speaking up when they are unsure without fear of embarrassment or judgement.

It’s also a very reassuring set–up for parents and guardians, as they are able to listen in on the session and offer their child some moral support if needed.

2. Well–Paced & Personalised Lessons

Helping a child hone their academic skills takes skill, and there’s nobody more qualified or experienced than a teacher.

However, many children don’t progress at the same pace as their peers, but this isn’t necessarily a reflection on the school that they go to. Sometimes teachers just don’t have enough time to reach everyone, especially if they have as many as 30 students to look after!

In a one–on–one setting, like tutoring, individual lessons can be customised and structured to suit a child’s educational needs. It’s as much about a child’s strengths as it is about their weaknesses, and a private and personal tutor will be able to easily identify their areas of improvement, as well as encourage what they are already doing well at.

A child doesn’t have to be struggling to reap the rewards of tutoring either. They might just want some extra attention in the lead up to an assessment or exam, or they may want support to actually extend their knowledge even further – past the standard set by authorities.

3. Suitable Session Times

The lives of primary school and high school aged students don’t just revolve around school.

Many take part in extracurricular activities in the evenings, such as music, sport, theatre, art and dance, as well as needing time away from study, especially on weekends and holidays.

Tutoring is so successful because it provides flexibility and convenience, for both the student and their family. They can pick days and times that suit them based on their calendar, and then block out 1 hour for a one on one tutoring lesson. On the flip side, this arrangement is also good for the tutors themselves, as they will get booked based on their advertised availability.

This flexibility also extends to the manner in which a child can undertake an online lesson. For example, they can do so on a desktop computer or laptop at home, or on a portable device or phone in another location.

4. Frequent Feedback & Support

Even when the teaching side of a session is over, the support doesn’t have to stop there.

One of the most important tools in a child’s academic arsenal is feedback. Positive and constructive feedback and guidance will help a student stay on track, as well as give them direction, motivation and much needed encouragement.

Because one on one tutoring enables individual attention and attention to detail, the feedback given will often be more specific and useful than the average test result, school report or parent–teacher night observation.
