How DVA Tutoring & NDIS Support Works at ThriveTutors: A Guide for Parents

At ThriveTutors, we are committed to providing exceptional educational support to all students, including those eligible for funding through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

If you’re a parent considering these options, this guide will walk you through the process of utilising DVA and NDIS funding for our education support services.

Department of Veterans' Affairs

What is the DVA Tuition Scheme?

Additional Tuition is a scheme provided by the Federal Government and administered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) whereby eligible children are entitled to government funded private tutoring.

Currently, the DVA can approve $3,500 for additional tuition and further funding can be provided when required.

At ThriveTutors, your DVA funding will provide your child with 1 school year (40 weeks) of personalised, one-on-one tutoring. That’s 40 hours of additional learning for your child and a chance for them to thrive academically and beyond.

Who is Eligible?

As with many DVA claims, there are specific eligibility criteria that caregivers must meet:

Under MRCAETS

A child of a member or former member who:

is eligible, or was at some point, for the Special Rate Disability Pension (SRDP);

suffers an impairment that constitutes 80 or more impairment points; or

whose death was related to service.

Under VCES (VEA):

An eligible child is someone who is:

The child of a current or former member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) who is receiving (or was receiving prior to their death) a Disability Compensation Payment:

at the special rate (commonly known as T&PI);

at the extreme disablement adjustment (EDA) rate;

at an increased rate because of multiple amputations, or multiple amputations and blindness; or

the child of a current or former ADF member whose death was war or defence caused; or

the child of a veteran who was an Australian prisoner-of-war and is now deceased.

DVA Tutoring

How Does it Work?

Step 1: Complete the Education Authority Observations

Once you have confirmed that your child is eligible, an education authority, such as your child’s teacher, must provide an assessment of your child’s academic status.

This authority needs to confirm that with the support of tutoring, your child can improve academically, and they must agree with your observations about your child’s potential. This is detailed in Part B of the additional tuition application form. Available here.

As the additional tuition funding is part of the Education Benefits Scheme, your child must first be approved for this scheme before applying for additional tuition.

Step 2: Submit Your Paperwork

While the DVA allows for postal submissions, we recommend emailing the completed form. Both scanned and digitally completed forms are acceptable. Send your application to both of the following email addresses:

educationschemes@dva.gov.au

tuition@dva.gov.au

Step 3: Contact ThriveTutors

Once you have confirmed that your child is eligible, all you need to do is get in touch with our team.

We will create a tutoring profile for you, match your child with one of our qualified Primary or High School Teachers and then book you in for regular tutoring lessons – usually x1 per week.

To support the DVA Tutoring requirements, all our teachers are:

  • Qualified Australian teachers.
  • Hold a valid Working with Children Check.
  • Understand how to provide structured tutoring lesson plans.

Step 4: Complete Your Weekly Tutoring Sessions:

From there, all you need to do is log on to the scheduled online platform at the designated time and ensure your child is ready for their lesson. Make sure they have all their necessary materials and a quiet space to learn.

That’s it!

Our team will handle all the invoicing requirements directly with the DVA, so you don’t have to worry about managing payments. Our team ensures that all documentation and billing are processed smoothly.
